  • Introduction

Taoyuan tourism boasts thousands of ponds, which were built for farmland irrigation and drainage purposes. In their heyday, there were as many as 10,000 plus ponds. The existing ponds nowadays serve multiple functions, including irrigation, water storage, drainage, flood detention, etc. They have fit perfectly into the local lifestyle and also play host to various aquatic plants and animals.

  • Ecological resources of importance

While the ponds supply water for agricultural irrigation and sustain the local aquaculture business, they are also home to a diversity of flora and fauna species, including Taipei grass frogs, Asian yellow pond turtles, ringed water snakes, Taiwan banded kraits, ospreys, mountain scops owls, yellow water lilies, and Nymphoides lungtanensis.

  • The current situation and potential threats of wetlands

In the past, many reservoirs in Hsinchu and Taoyuan Counties supported strong growth of Drosera indica and provided breeding sites for Pheasant-tailed Jacanas. Nowadays, the wildlife is almost extinct due to habitat damage in the wetland. We suggest that the authority deduce concrete facilities and pave roads in the reservoirs' surrounding areas to provide a hospitable living environment for amphibians and reptiles.
