Banping Lake Wetland is located between the foothill southeast of Banping Mountain and the decommissioned concrete plant that is bordered on the south by the rear alley of Banping Mountain.

  • Introduction

During the Qing Dynasty, quarries and lime production occupied the foothills of Banping Mountain. The mining caused landslides and casualties. Therefore, 5 detention and sedimentation ponds as well as retaining walls were constructed to prevent the disasters. In 1997, Kaohsiung City Government terminated the mining rights in advance, and accepted the recommendations from local organizations to manage and develop the unique terrain and habitat without affecting the flood prevention. The site sets the precedence for turning a decommissioned concrete plant into a wetland park. In 2011, Shoushan National Nature Park was established, encompassing Banping Mountain (including this wetland) as part of this national park.

  • Ecological resources of importance

There are 38 bird species at Banping Mountain, with the addition of Anatidae, Charadriidae and Ardeidae near the water body. Protected species include crested goshawk, crested serpent eagle and brown shrike; foreign species include white-vented myna and white-rumped shama. There are 4 species of mammals, including the endemic species, Swinhoe’s tree lizard and foreign species, many-lined sun skink. There are also 5 species of amphibians, 148 species of insects and 14 species of land snails. Among them, Parakaliella venusta and Sitalina latissimi are rare species.
