Introduction
During the Qing Dynasty, quarries and lime production occupied the foothills of Banping Mountain. The mining caused landslides and casualties. Therefore, 5 detention and sedimentation ponds as well as retaining walls were constructed to prevent the disasters. In 1997, Kaohsiung City Government terminated the mining rights in advance, and accepted the recommendations from local organizations to manage and develop the unique terrain and habitat without affecting the flood prevention. The site sets the precedence for turning a decommissioned concrete plant into a wetland park. In 2011, Shoushan National Nature Park was established, encompassing Banping Mountain (including this wetland) as part of this national park.
