  • Introduction

The area acquired the name “Chingluo” (green conch in mandarin) because it shapes like a large conch, and is covered by grass all year round. The fresh water flows from Hutoushan through the south of Chingluo communities and into the sea through Luojingshan. As sedimentation grew, the coastal wetland gradually took form.

  • Ecological resources of importance

This wetland offers diverse habitat with the mangrove, coastal sand pit, forest, farmland and intertidal zones. There is a great variety of vascular plants, including 90 families and 315 species. It is one of the locations in Penghu that offers the greatest biodiversity. Penghu sickle pod is the only endemic species within the county.
There are 24 families and 69 species of birds recorded here, including 12 protected species. The little terns account for the majority and most of them stay in Chingluo Sand Pit, which is a key breeding ground. They arrive every April and leave at the end of July. The oriental skylark is an endemic subspecies of Penghu County and the county bird. It is a resident bird that appears year round in this wetland.
Aquatic animals here include the dominant fish species, Japanese gizzard shad and black-tipped sardine. Decapods such as the red-clawed crab and Parasesarma pictum can also be found here. In addition, the endangered species, tri-spine horseshoe crab is spotted here.

Chinese Egret, Common Kestrel, Grey-faced Buzzard-Eagle, Little Tern, and Black-naped Tern

  • Types to be conserved

  • The current situation and potential threats of wetlands

Since destruction of the sea-gate, seawater has permeated fish ponds in the wetland. This has submerged the breeding sites and habitats of summer migratory birds, leaving them only the pond levee. Some of the fish ponds have become used as a training site for the Penghu Yacht Club.
