Introduction
Based on the research of Professor Liu Tsung-Kwei of Taiwan, it is likely that Menghuan Lake was originally a quake lake formed during slope landslide that closed the valley. The lake surface is 2,800 m2. The average width is approximately 40 m with around 100 m at the widest point. The average depth is approximately 20 to 40 cm with the maximum depth approximately between 60 and 80 cm. The soil 5 cm from the lake surface is sandy. The level of the lake substrate may vary in different seasons due to sedimentation or decomposition of organic substance in the soil.

Ecological resources of importance
Miscanthus sinensis var. Glaber is the terrestrial plant that covers the largest ground near Menghuan Lake with occasional trees in the surrounding. The planted Cryptomeria japonica and princess flower are also scattered nearby. The lake shore vegetation includes tall and short grass. The majority of the short grass area is covered by carpet grass while the tall grass area consists of mainly Miscanthus sinensis var. Glaber mixed with common melastoma and southern smartweed. The majority of the terrestrial plants near the lake are endemic species. There are also exotic species among them, including common wedgelet fern, princess flower, pilose beggarticks and camomileleaf soliva, which are gradually naturalized. In addition to isoetes taiwanesis, aquatic plants include associated plants such as sphaerocaryum malaccense, Taiwan bulrush, Globose twinball grass, feathery bogmoss, Nymphoides coreana, roughseed bulrush, Chinese water chesnut and Eriocaulon buergerianum Koern. Isoetes taiwanesis is a critically endangered species that can only be found at Menghuan Lake, making this area extremely significant.
