The wetland encompasses 18 farm ponds. Among them, Jiazou Pond, Jiuqiong Pond and Niutiaowan Pond are located in Chiayi County. The remaining 15 are located within Tainan City, including Jiangjun Pond, Shangqiedong Pond, Jingpu Pond, Beibu Pond, Fansitian Pond, Lengshui Pond, Datan Pond, Machouhoulian Pond, Machouhouding Pond, Linchu Pond, Taipingzun Pond, Beiliao Pond, Xibu Pond, Wushulin Pond and the downstream pond of Yanshui Pond.

  • Introduction

Farm ponds are an important landscape element in Jianan Plain. The water source for the 18 farm ponds is largely from the rainwater, rivers, reservoirs or the return flow from the farm. The downstream pond of Yanshui Pond is a part of the wilderness creek. Beibu Pond, Wushulin Pond and Jiuqiong Pond are not for irrigation purposes while the rest still serve this function.
The farm ponds are distributed along the central corridor of Jianan Plain, serving as stepping stones and ecological heaven for many migratory birds and the less migratory amphibians.

  • Ecological resources of importance

Most of the plants in this wetland are emergent plants or brackish plants, including the Polygonaceae, Onagraceae, Scrophulariaceae, Poaceae and Nelumbonaceae. Para grass is the dominant species. The survey of terrestrial animals shows that there are 11 protected bird species on record, and Taipei grass frog, the protected amphibian species, is also discovered here.

  • Endangered species

    N/A

  • Rare and valuable species

Taipei Grass Frog, Farmland Tree Frog, Black Kite, Common Kestrel, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Painted Snipe, and Common Pheasant.

  • Types to be conserved

Green Pond Frog, Eastern Collared Pratincole and Brown Shrike.

  • The current situation and potential threats of wetlands

Originally there were many reservoirs providing good habitats for Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Taipei Grass Fog, and Rana plancyi, but these creatures have become endangered or extinct due to habitat damage by humans. Pesticide pollution has also adversely affected frogs in the wetland.
