The wetland is located at Longgong Estuary. It extends north to the south of Budai Harbor; south to Haomei Village Fish Harbor; east to Provincial Highway 61 and Meihao Village Levee; west to the 6-meter isobaths.

Haomeiliao Wetland encompasses estuary, sandbank, lagoon, beefwood and mangrove, offering migratory birds a place at which to rest, forage and winter. It is also an aquaculture area with fish, shrimp and shellfish. The living fossil, horseshoe crab, also once appeared here. To protect the abundant natural resources, the Executive Yuan designated this area as Meihaoliao Natural Reserve by executive order in 1998.

Haomeiliao Wetland is a lagoon surrounded by fish farms. The area includes sandbank, beach, salt pan, windbreak and mangroves, which is important for many wildlife animals. It is where the protected species, little tern, forage for food; the midway for migratory and transient birds flying between East Asia as well as New Zealand and Australia; the breeding ground for rare shorebirds. It also abuts a key aquaculture area.
The dominant plant in this wetland is the black mangrove. The Kandelia, four-petaled mangrove and Lumnitzera are also planted. Mangrove associates can be found on higher altitudes, such as the rare species, Myoporum bontioides. During spring and autumn, large number of the Solopacidae and Charadriidae gather here, including the common greenshank, ruddy turnstone and Kentish plover. Aquatic animals include those commonly seen in the intertidal zone, such as Mictyris brevidactylus and Uca lactea.

In 1987, the Taiyen cut down a large portion of mangroves. The remaining mangroves have since gradually died due to land subsidence.
