  • Introduction

Puzih river basin was developed quite early thanks to Puzih River supplying water for agricultural, fishery, and public uses. This area enjoys well developed industrial, commercial, agricultural, and fishery sectors and high population density. In the period of industrial and commercial boom in the 1960s, there were many industrial parks on both sides of Puzih River, including major companies in automotive, electromechanical, pulp and paper, textile and plastic industries, driving the rapid growth of small and medium-sized factories and accelerating further industrial development in this area.

  • Ecological resources of importance

The tidal section at the downstream near Puzih Estuary is a wider and larger area with sandbank, wetland and larger river bed. It is also home to halophytes, sand plants and mangroves as well as invertebrates on the coastal mudflat and intertidal zone, such as fiddler crabs, mud skippers, snails, and gastropods. The organic debris from mangrove trees becomes food and baits for fish and shrimps, contributing to the vibrant growth of the local fishery industry and bird species.

  • Endangered species

    N/A

  • Rare and valuable species

Saunders's Gull and Eastern Marsh Harrier.

  • Types to be conserved

Eurasian Curlew and Eastern Collared Pratincole.

  • The current situation and potential threats of wetlands

Land subsidence and excessive pumping of underground water near the Chiayi coast has led to prolonged seawater submersion of Avicennia marina roots, causing withering of mangrove areas along the upper reaches of the estuary.
